Welcome to The IMS

The Indian Mathematical Society is the oldest scientific society in India. It was founded in April 1907 as "The Indian Mathematical  Club" by Late Shri V. Ramaswami Aiyar with twenty founding members with its Headquarters at Pune. In 1910 when a new revised Constitution was adopted it acquired its present name "The Indian Mathematical Society".

The object of the Indian Mathematical Society is the promotion of Mathematics Education and Research. Its central activity is to inspire and encourage researchers, students and all mathematics loving persons. The Society publishes two periodicals - The Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society and The Mathematics Student. Both the publications are peer reviewed journals and included in the UGC-CARE list Group II (Scopus). It is a matter of great pride for the Indian Mathematical Society to recall that the earliest contributions of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the greatest Indian mathematical genius of our time, were published in The Journal of The Indian Mathematical Society. The first fifteen page article entitled "Some properties of Bernoulli numbers" appeared in the volume of the Journal published in the year 1911. In all twelve of his research papers were published in the Journal of The Indian Mathematical Society.
